Sentiment is integral in music. Feeling gives listeners something to clutch on and relate to.
“somethingsgonnaworkout” is the first collaborative single from Australian producers 1tbsp & Jai Piccone, and as the title suggests, it’s brimming with positive sentiment. Built around an ecstatic vocal sample, trotting percussive elements and contorted synth keys the track inspires us to remain resolute, to grit our teeth through struggles and to recognise that sooner or later things will get better.
“somethingsgonnaworkout” is a shot of adrenaline. A song that will urge you to burst out the door and go running, irrespective if you’re into pounding the pavement. Sonically, there’s a physicality and sense of movement present, as if the notes are skimming across a body of water or bouncing off walls.
Arriving next is “Ano Kute”, a stutteringly dreamy cut sprinkled with Japanese vocal flecks where echoing pads mesh with percussion and rubbery synths. It’s a real cocktail with elements of UK Garage and trance all wrapped in a fun parcel. Locking heads on the writing, Jai and 1tbsp punched this track out in a single day but it took Jai “almost 6 months to mix it properly.”
And finally comes the title track, “Shine Love In” – another dose of racy house founded on a hooky Swedish vocal sample that wraps its arms around you and holds you tight. A relentless beat that’s bubbly and full of warmth. Conceived in a makeshift home studio in Barcelona, this one is a journey of juxtaposition – moody production sparring with playful vocal inflections. After zooming the track over to 1tbsp for his special touch, “Shine Love In” was ready to roar. In totality, the “Shine Love In” EP is a spritely and expertly produced 3 tracker. A melodious pairing of two close friends and musically gifted humans spreading clubby positivity far and wide.
Both artists had stellar years in 2023. 1tbsp released a slew of well-received records, embarked on a nine-date Australian tour, a headline North America tour, played shows in Tokyo and Europe and landed slots at Groovin’ The Moo, Listen Out and the inaugural SXSW Sydney. Whilst Jai Piccone took huge strides in his solo career releasing his 6-track Make Me Understand EP last year which garnered serious attention and helped land him a slot at Laneway Festival Sydney 2024.

'Supernova' has everything you want out of a melodic house tune: Bonobo-esque beats, rising synths, but it's the two imploding build-ups which give the track a really interesting touch. Memory Lab
